Mediation

Mediation is a legal practice area focused on resolving disputes outside of court through a facilitated negotiation process. A neutral third party, called a mediator, helps the disputing parties communicate, identify issues, explore options, and work toward a mutually acceptable agreement.

Mediation is commonly used in areas such as family law (e.g., divorce, child custody), business and commercial disputes, employment conflicts, trust and estate disputes, and other civil matters. It is typically voluntary, confidential, and non-binding unless the parties reach a settlement and formalize it in a written agreement.

The goal of mediation is to find a cooperative resolution that avoids the time, expense, and adversarial nature of litigation.
